Anti-arrhythmia Pharmacology: Enhancing Your Clinical Decision Making
Karen M. Marzlin DNP, CCNS, ACNP-AG, CCRN-CMC, CHFN
Antiarrhythmic agents are used in the emergent and long-term management of atrial and ventricular arrhythmias. These high-risk medications carry a potential for the development of life-threatening arrhythmias due to their powerful impact on the action potential. For this reason, these agents require a high level of clinical knowledge for effective prescribing, administration, patient counseling, and evaluation.
During this session, Karen will enhance your understanding of these medications by using the link between the cardiac action potential and the drug mechanism of action, to provide a physiological framework. Antiarrhythmic medications used in the treatment of atrial, ventricular, and other cardiac arrhythmias will be included in this program. Agents are discussed by classification with characteristics and nursing implications of specific agents highlighted. Clinical decision making is guided by algorithm, based on patient and drug specific features.
The results of recent clinical trials for newer antiarrhythmic agents are integrated into the discussion of literature. Evidence from the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, and Heart Rhythm Society for the management of supraventricular, atrial, and ventricular arrhythmias serve as the foundation for clinical recommendations. Join Karen as she simplifies complex medications in a manner that will aid you in clinical decision making when it comes to antiarrhythmic medications. From the novice APRN to the most experienced there is something for everyone to learn.
